The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari is a short(about 1 hour) feature length silent film. The story is about Doctor Caligari(Werner Krauss), a seemingly crazy man, and his assistant Cesare(Conrad Veidt), who can supposedly see the future. When the story starts Caligari and Cesare are entertaining townspeople as part of a carnival, and Cesare appears to be drugged or talking in his sleep, obeying the commands of Dr. Caligari, who seems to be some type of hypnotist. The story is told by a third person, Francis(Freidrich Feher), who attends the carnival with a friend. Francis's friend talks to Cesare in his trance-like state, and Cesare predicts Francis's friend will die the next morning-- and he does! The story shifts to a trial in which Caligari and Cesare are accused of being responsible for killing Alan's friend(and other people). The story is told in a deliberately disorienting style, with obviously fake sets and exaggerated acting, possibly to make you mistrust your senses and make the viewer skeptical and anxious about the outcome-- which is one of the most famous twist endings in the history of the movies.
