In ancient Rome, Encolpio (Martin Potter) is a student who both roommates and friends with Ascilto (Hiram Keller), that is until Ascilto decides to steal their slave-boy, Gitone (Max Born) for his very own. Encolpio rescues Gitone from Vernacchio (Fanfulla), the theatre owner who bought the slave-boy from Ascilto. By giving Gitone a choice of who to live with [he chooses Ascilto], Escolpio is left alone; but his adventures are just beginning. Through his travels he, meets Eumolpus (Salvo Randone), a curmudgeonially poet, and Trimalchio (Mario Romagnoli), a death-obsessed merchant; is taken prisoner by Lichas (Alain Cuny), a pirate; visits a god-child; and comes face to face with a minotaur. Along his way, he continues searching for Ascilto and his lost slave-boy Gitone.
