Felix Bonhoeffer (Anthony Hopkins), a writer working on a screenplay, seems to be losing his grip on reality. He witnesses a fatal car accident caused by road-rage and things begin to fall apart for him. Reality becomes distorted as what he knows is tangible becomes wrapped up in what he knows is fiction. Characters that he’s written in his screenplay appear in his real life. Ray (Christian Slater) and Jeffrey (Jeffrey Tambor) are two of these characters, hit men who have knocked off a victim (Michael Clark Duncan) who appears innocent. Ray drops dead on the set of the film Felix is writing, and his boss (John Turturro) demands that Felix rewrite the script. As Felix travels to the Mojave Desert to sort out the kinks in his screenplay, reality and insanity blend together and the lines of Felix’s life blur so much he can’t tell which world he’s in.
